Healthy options

This month’s recipient of Postscripts Fresh Ideas recognition goes to Austin ISD’s Leona Doss Elementary School for creating Salad Bar Day for students this spring.  The school’s efforts to promote healthy eating was a big hit on that campus to the administration, students, and of course, parents!  Doss Elementary students and Principal Janna Griffin were even featured in a recent NPR report highlighting the school’s commitment to healthy food choices for its students.

According to the Doss Elementary School’s PTA website, in January, Doss Cafeteria Manager Michelle Korns and Austin ISD Food Services Students Manager Wendi Caudill began implementing a made-to-order salad bar within the cafeteria line at Doss Elementary.  Made-to-order salads qualify as a food entrée, which allows for those on the free and reduced lunch program to participate. Teachers, staff and parents were also able to purchase made-to-order salads at lunchtime. The purpose of Salad Bar Day was to educate students about how to use a made-to-order salad bar and also to encourage students to make healthy food choices. Salad Bar Day reinforces TEKS and encourages healthy food choices.  With the help of Parent Teacher Association volunteers like Tiffany Galligan and Emma Garrett, the program was a huge success.  Congrats, Doss Elementary!
