The Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) this month released OSEP Fast Facts: Children Identified With Autism (Updated 2024). This OSEP Fast Facts sheet takes an updated look at OSEP data on children whose primary disability is autism.
OSEP reports that in school year 2022–23, 12.81 percent of students with disabilities were identified with autism. Of those, 40.6 percent of students identified with autism, ages 5 (in kindergarten) to 21, were educated inside the regular class 80 percent or more of the day in the U.S., outlying areas, and freely associated states. The OSEP report also provides numbers on disciplinary removals and drop-out rates, among other interesting facts.
