The holidays are finally here, and cooler weather is coming! In Texas, you never know how long it will last, so the next time you get the opportunity to curl up with your favorite pumpkin spice beverage and a good book, consider checking out the new School Health and Related Services (SHARS) Handbook.
The highly anticipated new handbook was made available to the public on November 1, 2021. It replaced
the SHARS section of the Childrens’ Services Handbook within the Texas Medicaid Providers Procedure Manual. The recent SHARS program changes were all documented within the new manual along with several of the existing SHARS policies and procedures. The manual did elaborate on some of the new policies but most districts still have quite a few questions.
The TASB Special Education Solutions team has been combing through the material, has developed
resources, such as this policy change summary document, and is hosting webinars to help districts better understand the changes and so that districts can get compliant within the allotted timeframe. Registration information for the upcoming webinars can be found on the Special Education Solutions Training webpage. While there, be sure to bookmark the TASB SHARS website and sign up for the SHARS Matters quarterly e-newsletter to stay up-to-date on all things SHARS.
