Announcing the Zach Scott Theater screening of “Chasing Smoke,” a documentary about the use of Restorative Justice in Texas schools
Presented by Zach Scott Theater, BRAVE Communities, Life Anew Ministries, & SaulPaul on Tuesday, May 21st
LifeAnew, SaulPaul Productions, BRAVE Communities, and the Zach Scott Theater are thrilled to announce the upcoming screening of Chasing Smoke, a documentary chronicling the successful use of Restorative Practices in Texas schools and youth institutions.
The screening is open to the public on a pay-as-you-wish basis (suggested donation of $5 to $100). Proceeds will benefit the BRAVE Young Women’s Leader Program Scholarship. The screening will be held at the Zach Scott Theater on Tuesday, May 21, 2019. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the movie will start right at 7 p.m. Tickets are available online pre-event on a first-come-first-serve basis.
Chasing Smoke documents the impact of Restorative Practices and Restorative Justice when implemented in Texas schools and other institutions serving youth. The film examines how our traditional, punitive disciplinary systems often do not lead to positive outcomes among youth and other marginalized populations, as they do not address the root causes of behavior.
Restorative Practices offer a different approach to discipline that centers on understanding students through the deeper perspectives of their family backgrounds, life circumstances, and personal motivations.
The screening of Chasing Smoke will be followed by a discussion with the presenters, as well as members of BRAVE Communities.
The screening is being held as a kickoff for the upcoming Be the Change Conference, a three-day event to be held this July in Austin, which will engage educators, law enforcement, faith leaders, community service providers and more around learning how to build community-wide restorative ecosystems.
